Joy Lyman

Joy Lyman is an education advocate driven by a passion for ensuring student access to engaging learning experiences that will serve their needs and have a lasting impact. She has worked in public and charter schools, traditional and alternative programs, and in various roles, from museum educator, to teacher, to lead instructional coach, to interim principal. In her most recent role, she developed and oversaw a coaching program across three Project Based Learning high schools while also teaching history and English classes. She has expertise in and passion for civil rights history, Project Based Learning, educator advocacy, instructional coaching, and communications. Born and raised in Southeast Michigan, she is a graduate of the University of Michigan (Go Blue!), and has completed multiple leadership development programs and education policy fellowships over the course of her career. In her fellowships, she successfully advocated for the expansion of funding for Grow Your Own Programs in Michigan, wrote an op-ed and testified before the Michigan Senate Education Committee about library access, and formed partnerships to help make universal pre-K a reality.

What I Do

I am a member of the Leaders for Equity in Education (LEE) Public Policy Fellowship team for 2024-2025. I am partnered with the PIE Network on the Communications & Member Engagement team, and I help to support with things like the website, social media, our Rapid Response newsletter, and the PIE Network membership process.

When I'm not at Work

I am probably with my friends and family! I might be hunting for vintage clothes, upcycling things, reading, enjoying great food, traveling, or listening to music.
