The PIE Network was founded in 2007 by four leading policy organizations:Center for American Progress, Center for Reinventing Public Education, Education Sector, and the Thomas B. Fordham Institute. They also recognized the important role that states play in moving education reform forward. They founded the PIE Network within a few states, identifying those leaders most impatient with the pace of change to explore the possibility of finding other diverse thinkers who also shared these common reform commitments. Some of the nation’s leading education foundations supported the PIE Network’s pilot year, including the Eli and Edith Broad Foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, The Joyce Foundation, The Stuart Foundation and the Walton Family Fund.
In 2011, the National Council on Teacher Quality became a fith policy partner for the network. While these leading thinkers spanned the ideological spectrum, they all recognized that they shared common commitments for improving public schools.
