MinnCAN MinnCAN

MinnCAN (Minnesota Campaign for Achievement Now) is a platform for Minnesota citizens to effectively speak up for kids.

We don’t build schools or train teachers. Instead, MinnCAN runs results-oriented advocacy campaigns through research and policy, communications and mobilization, and advocacy for policy change.

We’re building a new movement of concerned citizens advocating to fundamentally reform our public schools through smart public policies, and we will not rest until every Minnesota child, regardless of race or class, has access to a great public school.

2011 Policy Goals 2011 Policy Goals

This legislative session, MinnCAN is declaring a state of emergency for Minnesota public schools. Its plan is to advocate for three commonsense reforms that will put Minnesota on track to providing great schools for all.

  • Remove roadblocks for teachers: Open alternate paths to getting talented teachers certified and in our classrooms.
  • Clear a path to quality pre-K: Implement a statewide rating system for pre-schools so that parents can make the right choice for their child.
  • Build a barometer of teacher effectiveness: Develop a trusted system that measures the impact of teachers on their students' achievement.

On March 7, 2011, Minnesota's governor signed MinnCAN's bill into law to open alternative paths to teacher certification, the first victory for its Minnesota School Emergency in Effect campaign.

MinnCAN officially launched on January 24th at the state capitol in St. Paul. The launch included its new website (www.minncan.org), its first research report, The State of Minnesota Public Education, 2011, a full advisory board, its 2011 policy agenda, and the complete 3-person state team.
