Stand for Children Arizona Stand for Children Arizona

Stand for Children Arizona was founded in 2009 and is a part of the national Stand for Children organization, an innovative, grassroots child advocacy organization. Our mission is to use the power of grassroots action to help all children get the excellent public education and strong support they need to thrive. Our members believe we need to stand up for our children now - particularly for their education from pre-school through high school - to create a better future for America.

Stand—AZ plans to continue growing membership among not just parents, but educators, charter schools, and the business community. It hopes to recruit and assist education champions to run for local school board offices in 2012, and build the capacity to support state and local candidates who are education champions in the 2012 election. “Stand for Children Arizona is building a strong voice for children, one member at a time,” says Katy Cavanagh.

Recent Achievements Recent Achievements
  • Stand for Children Arizona’s work in passage of SB 1040 helped Arizona jump from a 40th place finish in the first round of Race to the Top to the finals in the second round. The legislation ensures, for the first time, that individual teachers and principals are evaluated by the progress of their students.
  • By mobilizing members and contacting more than 20,000 voters, Stand—AZ successfully supported Prop 100—a temporary 1 percent increase in the state sales tax that helped avoid severe school funding cuts.
